Project Coordinator - Women in Skilled Trades

About the Role

Keepers of the Circle is looking to recruit a Project Coordinator to engage, coordinate and develop partnerships with community, industry, and corporate partners across Ontario.

The Project Coordinator will engage in an initiative focused on the recruitment and retention of Indigenous women apprentices in the Red Seals trades while building on the Canadian Apprenticeship strategy. The Project Coordinator will promote meaningful careers within the skilled trades for Indigenous women across Ontario by working with industry partners within the skilled trades to ensure that they are thoroughly supported to succeed in their apprenticeships. Within this project, this role will evaluate existing obstacles and barriers that Indigenous women and industry employers face, facilitate and lead regular group committee discussions among stakeholders to create solutions to diversity, equity, and inclusion challenges, and implement recruitment strategies to increase Indigenous representation within the Red Seal Trades.

Roles and Responsibilities of WST Project Coordinator include:

Project Coordination and Planning Activities (30%)

  • Properly maintain documentation of partnerships and progress and provide monthly updates and reports to the Executive Director
  • Coordinate project activities, resources, equipment, and information
  • Manage project budget
  • Identify provincial industry partners and organizations through partnership mapping and create an outreach strategy for partnership engagement
  • Organize a conference to showcase Indigenous women apprentices and best practices identified from project activities
  • Other duties to support the Skills Development Team at Keepers of the Circle

Recruitment and Outreach Activities (30%)

  • Lead focus groups with local Indigenous women from communities across Ontario to identify barriers or challenges to pursuing careers in the skilled trades and document findings
  • Collaborate with web designer to design and implement an Indigenous women job board
  • Work closely with videographer to ideate and create short-form videos showcasing Indigenous women apprenticeship success stories
  • Lead in the coordination and creation of marketing strategies to promote and recruit Indigenous women to the trades
  • Work with Partner Liaisons and Community Outreach Coordinator to enroll Indigenous women into apprenticeships with employers

Industry Partnerships and Apprenticeship Support Activities (40%)

  • Conduct focus groups with participating industry partners in different Red Seal trades to identify barriers or challenges in the recruitment and retention of Indigenous women and document findings
  • Lead committee meetings with industry partners and apprentices and facilitate dialogue around challenges, barriers, and solutions
  • Attend relevant industry conferences and meetings with regard to this project
  • Be knowledgeable in industry employer’s workplace diversity, equity, and inclusion practices
  • Advocate for the safety and inclusion of Indigenous women, girls, and gender-diverse people in the workplace
  • Assist Partnership Liaisons with presentations to industry partners, community partners, and other organizations to support with establishing agreements to offer Indigenous women, girls, and gender-diverse women work or employment opportunities
  • Act as a positive representation of Keepers of the Circle always


Requirements and Skills

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and is comfortable leading presentations and workshops with management teams
  • Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills
  • Ability to document learnings, evaluate information and feedback gathered, and present information in a formal report
  • Strong understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion practices and policies
  • Experience working in a group within an Indigenous community setting
  • Organized and efficient with time management and able to multi-task
  • Strong knowledge of MS Office
  • Excellent problem-solving ability
  • Non-judgmental and inclusive
  • Respect to diversity
  • Able to demonstrate a high level of professionalism at all times
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion
  • Strong understanding of or willing to learn about different 39 Red Seal skilled trades,
  • Ability to apply critical thinking to solve complex issues and identify strategies and solutions to address cultural ignorance
  • Trauma-informed training is a plus
  • Previous experience in the skilled trades and/or industry technical expertise/knowledge is a plus
  • Experience managing teams or leading a project is preferred
  • Ability to travel and be away from home for periods of time and a valid G license.
  • Keepers of the Circle value the local community and preference will be given to recruiting a local candidate who can work onsite at our Indigenous hub centre in Kirkland Lake
